If your skincare routine has started to feel like a chemistry experiment, you’re not alone. After 50, skin often becomes drier and more easily irritated, and adding more products isn’t always the answer.
The simple rule: thin to thick
A practical way to layer most skincare is to start with the lightest, most watery products and move toward thicker creams and oils. That helps keep the routine organized without turning it into a ten-step project.
- Cleanser
- Watery toner or essence, if you use one
- Serum
- Moisturizer
- Face oil, if you like one
- Sunscreen in the morning
Morning: keep it practical
In the morning, I would rather see someone consistently use a gentle cleanser, a moisturizer that agrees with their skin, and sunscreen than own a shelf full of products they rarely use. If you enjoy a serum, put it on before moisturizer.
Night: this is where treatments can fit
Nighttime is a good place for treatment products such as retinoids or other targeted serums. But more isn’t automatically better. If your skin is getting tight, stinging, unusually red or flaky, that’s a reason to simplify rather than pile on another active.
Give each product a job
One of the easiest ways to save money is to ask what each product is supposed to do. A hydrating serum and a moisturizer may overlap. Two different exfoliating products may be more than your skin needs. A routine you can stick with is usually more useful than a complicated routine that looks impressive on the bathroom counter.
And don’t forget sunscreen
For daytime, sunscreen belongs at the end of your skincare routine, after moisturizer. Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen that you will actually use consistently and follow the directions on the product label.
My take after 50
I think the sweet spot is a routine that feels good enough to use every day without making your bathroom look like a laboratory. Start simple, add one thing at a time, and pay attention to how your skin responds.
