If you’re over 50, you’ve probably noticed that staying healthy takes a little more attention than it used to. That’s one reason books about longevity keep getting my attention. Outlive: The Science and Art of Longevity by Peter Attia, MD, with Bill Gifford, takes a detailed look at how we can think about living longer while also trying to preserve our health and quality of life.
What Is Outlive About?
Published in 2023, Outlive focuses on longevity, chronic disease prevention, exercise, nutrition, sleep, and emotional health. The publisher describes it as a guide to taking a more proactive approach to long-term health and healthspan—the years we spend in good health.
What I like about the subject is that it isn’t simply about adding years to your life. It also raises the question of what you want those years to look like. That’s a conversation worth having at any age, but especially after 50.
Why It Fits Well After 50
The book covers several subjects that matter to people trying to stay active as they age, including strength and exercise, nutrition, sleep, cardiovascular health and cognitive health. The publisher specifically highlights exercise as an important part of its longevity approach.
- Longevity and healthspan
- Exercise and physical performance
- Nutrition and healthy aging
- Sleep and recovery
- Chronic disease risk
- Emotional and mental well-being
A Book to Read, Not Just Buy
This is not a tiny, quick-read book. The hardcover edition is 496 pages, so it is better approached as something you can read a little at a time and come back to.
And that’s actually part of the appeal for me. Getting older isn’t something you fix with one product or one workout. There are a lot of pieces to the puzzle, and sometimes a good book can give you ideas to think about and discuss with your own doctor or other health professionals.
